How it ends

How relationships end

I heard from a friend once that someone who will cheat on her/his boy/girlfriend just to be with you will, sooner or later, cheat on you too…

But experience showed me a harsher truth that even the most loving, loyal, and intellectual person can make the same mistake.

So why do we cheat?

There will be a point in our lives where we are going to meet, get swept off our feet, and unwillingly fall for someone else. And somehow, we are eventually going to find out that the emotions we start to feel are agonizingly uncontrollable. We then start to feel doubtful of ourselves and curious of this new “feeling” that seem very foreign, but very nice at the same time. Finally, we start to forget… well, want to forget, that we have existing ties, promises, and commitments.

Now comes in the big hurt.

Often we are overcome by this fleeting emotion of “kilig”– the thrill it begets really has a way of clouding our decisions in life…

So we choose the new.

We leave the existing.

And we try so hard to ignore the truth that we just caused unbearable pain to someone we supposedly loved and cared for so deeply. So we look for an escape; a justification–hoping that it might help us sleep better at night. When we find no way of going around, we charge forward calling it “honesty”. So we tell the truth as a last resort, effectively cutting any ties, breaking any promises, and ending existing commitments we once only dreamed of having.

Tears will fall, but it’s okay–we told the “truth”. And we think that it justifies every lie we told, every truth we decided to hide.

We’ll say it isn’t the end but it only means that it is.

So we walk away.

We tell ourselves we did the right thing.

We move on, and we leave them hanging, hurting.

We do all these stupid, unfair acts just because we couldn’t control our emotions…

when all we had to do…

…was control our actions.
