For One More Day

This book, which was written by Mitch Albom (author of Tuesdays with Morrie) moved me to tears. I was reading the book on my way home to Laguna, and i actually cried in front (well technically, besides pala) of the other passengers. I didn’t have a handkerchief with me, so i looked stupid with my red nose and puffy eyes. People must’ve thought that i was crazy or shallow for crying over a pocket book.

Well anyway, the story is about Charlie ‘Chick’ Benetto, a former baseball player who encounters problems with his career, family, finances and seeks refuge by being an alcoholic. It was the last straw for him when he found out he wasn’t invited to his daughter’s wedding. He attempts suicide — and fails — and sees his mother who died 8 years ago.

Chick returns to their old home and spends the day with his mother, wherein factors related to his difficult childhood and strained relationship with his father are revealed to him. His mother assists him in getting his life back on track and resolving his issues. The day ends when he regains consciousness in the arms of a police officer. 

The story ends when  the author described how Benetto quit drinking and reconciled with his family. At the end, Maria is revealed to have been the narrator of the story.

From what i got from the ‘net, the book was adapted into a made-for-television movie, which was aired by ABC on December 9, 2007.
