The King of Pop is No More

Monday, June 29, 2009

‘The King of Pop has died’. This had been the headline of newspapers 3 days ago.

It was unexpected. Michael Jackson embraced death’s arms at an early age of 50. The whole world is mourning over the demise of the legendary King of Pop.

His death means a great loss to the music industry. His sensational hits will always be remembered, as well as his great fashion sense (oyeah. The bitin* pants, white socks and black shoes) and unforgettable dance moves. We can compare his popularity with John Lennon and Elvis Presley, who are legendary in the music industry.

Everyone is paying tribute to MJ — impersonators performing his signature dance moves, fans even going to the extent of making san sculpture in his memory, and even the media is paying its last respects to the King of Pop. There are the 24-hour music video marathon, celebrities performing his songs and television shows featuring the life and death of the one and only, Michael Jackson.

But wasn’t there a time when media gorged on his misery? Wasn’t his face all over the television when he was reportedly molesting children? He was even constantly mocked and ridiculed in movies and spoof shows where comedians impersonate his fashion sense, rotting nose, white skin and his almost skeleton-like face which cracks the audience up?

Media builds people, but it can also destroy them. One day your famous, the next you are surrounded with controversies and issues. Like a tiger hunting for its prey, it will scrutinize you and watch your every move. And when it finally sees a chance to make its move, it will pounce on you leaving you helpless and on its mercy.
