On Happiness

‘I lived without yesterday or tomorrow, in the eternal present. This is, precisely the definition of happiness’
-Czeslow Milosz
The definition of happiness may vary from one person to another. If I were to describe what happiness is, I would compare it to the feeling of eating ice cream and chocolates after a hard day’s work or when I’m feeling down. Happiness is when you feel like everything’s all right and going your way.
The writer shared his childhood memories and how he viewed the adults when he was still a child. I only remember a fraction of my experiences when I was still a naive little girl. I remember how much things were simpler back then. The only problems that I remembered encountering were disobeying my parents during siesta time (I didn’t want to sleep in the afternoon and wanted to play instead) and not getting what I want. Now, I wish that I can sleep in the afternoon instead of attending a boring class, and I learned the hard way that you don’t always get what you want. I was excited and always wishing that I would grow up fast, but now I am wishing that time would go slow or that I can go back to the simple and problem-free world of children.
Unlike the author, I sometimes can’t concentrate solely on the goal of my action. If he is able to not think about the pain the worm is going through in the process of being the bait for him to catch a fish, I on the other hand keep on thinking of the possible consequences of my action and the people I might step on the way. I cannot fully see the success of my plan and action without also seeing the possibility of failure.
But we cannot escape failure. Sometimes, losing is even a way of learning. We sit back and reflect where we went wrong so the next time around, we can avoid doing the same mistake in order to achieve success. Losing is a part of our life. Without it, we won’t enjoy the sweet feeling of winning.
The truth that nothing is permanent in the world that we are living in, is what most of us cannot take. Some even have to learn the hard way that everything exists only for a short time. We have the tendency of taking for granted not only material things around us, but also people who are there for us in times of our need. We realize their worth only when the time comes when we know that we cannot bring them back.
Everything exists only for a fleeting moment. No matter how much we want to grasp and keep them forever, we just have to be contented for their existence and for being a part of our life even for just a short time.
I CAN’t GET OVER THE PIG
Friday, June 27, 2008Did You Know…
If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee.
(Hardly seems worth it.)
If you farted consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough gas
is produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb.
(think I know someone who could make TWO bombs!)
The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out to
the body to squirt blood 30 feet.
(O.M.G.!)
A pig’s orgasm lasts 30 minutes.
(In my next life, I want to be a pig)
A cockroach will live nine days without its head before it
starves to death. (Creepy.)
(I’m still not over the pig.)
The flea can jump 350 times its body length. It’s like a human
jumping the length of a football field.
(30 minutes… lucky pig. can you imagine??)
The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds.
(What could be so tasty on the bottom of the ocean?)
Some lions mate over 50 times a day.
(I still want to be a pig in my next life, or maybe a piglion)
Butterflies taste with their feet.
(Something I always wanted to know.)
The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue.
(Hmmmmmm……..in a woman maybe, can;t stop talking they can’t, I know what my strongest muscle is)
Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than
left-handed people.
(If you’re ambidextrous, do you split the difference?)
Elephants are the only animals that cannot jump.
(OK, so that would be a good thing, but why would they want to anyway?)
A cat’s urine glows under a black light.
(I wonder who was paid to figure that out?)
An ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain.
(I know some people like that.)
Starfish have no brains.
(I know some people like that too.)
Polar bears are left-handed.
(If they switch, they’ll live a lot longer.)
Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for
pleasure.
(What about that pig??)
………..and I STILL cannot forget about that PIG !!

Modern Version/Politically Correct version of The Three Little Pigs
Saturday, June 21, 2008Three Little Pigs
Author unknown
Once there were 3 little pigs who lived together in mutual respect and in harmony with their environment. Using materials that were indigenous to the area they each built a beautiful house. One pig built a house of straw, one a house of sticks, and one a house of dung, clay and creeper vines shaped into bricks and baked in a small kiln. When they were finished, the pigs were satisfied with their work and settled back to live in peace and self-determination. But their idyll was soon shattered. One day, along came a big, bad wolf with expansionist ideas. He saw the pigs and grew very hungry in both a physical and ideological sense. When the pigs saw the wolf, they ran into the house of straw. The wolf ran up to the house and banged on the door, shouting, "Little pigs, little pigs, let me in!"
The pigs shouted back, "Your gunboat tactics hold no fear for pigs defending their homes and culture."
But the wolf wasn’t to be denied what he thought was his manifest destiny. So he huffed and puffed and blew down the house of straw. The frightened pigs ran to the house of sticks, with the wolf in hot pursuit. Where the house had stood, other wolves bought up the land and started a banana plantation.
At the house of sticks, the wolf again banged on the door and shouted, "Little, pigs, little pigs, let me in!" The pigs shouted back, "Go to hell, you carnivorous, imperialistic oppressor!"
At this the wolf huffed and puffed and blew down the house of sticks. The pigs ran to the house of bricks, with the wolf close at their heels. Where the house of sticks had stood, other wolves built a time-share condo resort complex for vacationing wolves, with each unit a fibreglass reconstruction of the house of sticks, as well as native curio shops, snorkeling and dolphin shows.
At the house of bricks, the wolf again banged on the door and shouted, "Little pigs, little pigs, let me in!"
This time in response, the pigs sang songs of solidarity and wrote letters of protest to the United Nations.
By now the wolf was getting angry at the pigs’ refusal to see the situation from the carnivore’s point of view. So he huffed and puffed, and huffed and puffed, then grabbed his chest and fell over dead from a massive heart attack brought on from eating too many fatty foods.
The three little pigs rejoiced that justice had triumphed and did a little dance around the corpse of the wolf. Their next step was to liberate their homeland. They gathered together a band of other pigs who had been forced off their lands. This new brigade of porcinistas attacked the resort complex with machine-guns and rocket launchers and slaughtered the cruel wolf oppressors, sending a clear signal to the rest of the hemisphere not to meddle in their internal affairs. Then the pigs set up a model socialist democracy with free education, universal health care and affordable housing for everyone.
Please note: The wolf in this story was a metaphorical construct. No actual wolves were harmed in the writing of the story.
Rain, Rain Go Away
Wednesday, June 18, 2008Its funny how the weather is in sync with my mood.
This morning, i was sunny and cheery. Everything felt soooo right. I woke up happy and in a good mood. I thought nothing could ruin my day. But while i was in my ES11 class, i was solving all the problems thatour professor gave us, but my mind is filled with other matters not related with statics or physics. itried to convince myself that i was okay and there is nothing to feel sad about.
Then came lunch time and i started to realize what was bothering me. Sobrang bigat ng pakiramdam ko. I wanted to cry my heart out but i don’t want to do it in public. The weather then was cloudy and it looked like it was going to rain. Aun. Umulan nga. hehehe.. Galing. dapat pala lagi akong masaya para maaraw palagi.
keep your friends close, but your enemies closer
I feel so helpless …
I thought that i was already winning from a battle that i have tried so hard to survive. I thought that i was okay and i can manage life without him. BUT NO.. I was wrong..
Being friends with him is so hard pala. Now i believe people when they say that its hard to be friends with your ex. Lalo na pag clsoe pa din kayo. Actually i have already accepted the fact na break na kami. But what i can’t accept is, nakikipagdate na siya sa iba.. Sadness… And i don’t like the girl that he’s dating now. (as if naman mei karapatan pa ko diba?) hehehe..
Eniwei.. Im just so f*cking depressed because last weekend, i thought i was really over him.. haaay..
i missed blogging
I am excited with my CL30o class. Wondering what subject it is? CL 30 is Comparative Literature and discussion on European Literature. At the start of the class, our professor asked us why we took the subject. When she asked me, I answered:
BERN: I am from the college of Engineering (apparently i was the only one from engg). Honestly speaking, I took this subject because there were no other subjects that would fit in my schedule. (laughter from class)
PROFESSOR: Why did you choose this subject?
BERN: uhm.. Trip lang? hehe..
(more laughter)
PROFESSOR: So.. Kidding time lang? (smiles)
BERN: But i have always been interested in literature but i haven’t read any stories or novels from the European Literature.
I really felt stupid afterwards. Why couldn’t i have thought of a reason that won’t make me look stupid in front of teh whole class?! I am not surehow my prof reacted with my answer.
Anyway, when shew wrote our readings for the whole semester, I became more interested in the subject.
When my friends knew that I was taking CL30, either they all reacted negatively or they would ask me what subject it was.
‘Aanhin mu naman ang CL30? Dapat nag 15 units ka na lang.’
‘hay nako bern. Iddrop mu lang din yan’
‘anu naman matutunan mo jan?’
WOW! so much for being my friends noh? hehe.
Anyway, i’m really excited because my group will report about fairy tales in their original form. (The politically correct daw sabi ni mam). Stories like, sleeping Beauty, Red Riding Hood, Three Little Pigs.. I guess i was really lucky inm getting it during the draw lots.
The sad part in CL30 class is that my classroom is in teh 5th floor of the CAL new bldg. Imagine how much exercise i am getting when i rush into class. TSK.
i am very understanding
